A question for all you girls

I haven’t blogged in so long. Life is crazy! I’m so happy it’s summer though. Summer in Maine can be beautiful, but you just never know what to expect. Lately it’s been really cloudy & rainy, with high’s averaging in the 60’s/mid 70’s. Not great! I’m hoping for some beach days soon. My 10K is August 1st and I’m getting nervous. I run 3-4 days a week now, anywhere from 5-7 miles at a time. A few weeks before the race I think I’ll up my running days a little bit and clean up my diet a little. I eat pretty healthily now but it could be better.

So onto my question:-) May be a bit TMI. For all you girls on birth control, are any of you on Yaz? My doctor prescribed it for me and I started taking it the first day of my last period, May 25. Before taking Yaz, my periods were extremely regular. I got it on time, every month, usually every 25-27 days. I’m now 4 pills into my 2nd pack of Yaz and have yet to get my period. It was my understanding that you’re suppose to get your period when you’re on the last 4 inactive pills, but i know everybody’s cycle is different. I know first starting BC can screw up your cycle a little bit, but should i be concerned? I know Yaz can make your periods alot lighter and shorter, which is great, but can they make your periods go away all together? Not that i like getting my period, but it puts my mind at ease when i get it lol Any input from anyone on Yaz, or BC in general would be helpful. Thanks!

drunk drivers

My 6 year old niece, her infant brother and their Mom were in a head on collision Friday afternoon after being hit by a 25 year old man who was intoxicated.  After they were pulled from their car (what was left of it), it caught on fire. My niece spent the night in the hospital, but she’s going to be fine thank god. She just has alot of bruises and is really sore. The baby is fine, too, which is amazing. Not a scratch on him. Their Mom is still in the hospital. She had alot of glass in her chest from when the windshield shattered. She also has a fractured arm, along with lacerations and alot of bruising. She’ll be ok, it’ll just be a long recovery process. It just makes me so angry..this guy came so close to taking the lives of a woman and her two little kids.  He chose to get drunk at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, and then proceed to drive..endangering the lives of anyone in his path.  I know in the end he’ll get what he deserves, it just makes me feel sick inside that he could have taken my niece away from me and my family forever. My niece is so young and innocent, she deserves to be safe and happy, not going to bed crying because her Mommy is hurt. I know bad things happen all the time and we can’t stop them, I just wish some people would realize the consequences of their actions beforehand.  I’m so happy that in this situation, everyone is OK.  I know not everyone gets a happy ending when things like this happen. It’s just hard not to think of the what-ifs.

I am off to the gym to run off my anger, frustration, sadness and anxiety from the past couple of days. i havn’t made it to the gym in almost a week (!) so i need some quality running time! running always makes me feel better. :)

It’s offical!

I registered yesterday for my first (but certainly not last!) 10K! The race isn’t until August 1 but I’m so excited! After registering I went for a 6 mile run and it felt fantastic:-) The snow here is melting like crazy and the weather is getting so warm. (It was about 50 here yesterday..which is insanely warm for Maine..I walked home from the gym in shorts!) The only drawback from all the melting and warm temps. is everything is all muddy! I want to run outside so bad, but i think i’ll wait awhile longer. Well I’m off to the gym..have a fantastic week everyone!:-)

I run because…

I saw this on a t-shirt and thought it was amazing! I didn’t write it but it describes why I love to run.

 I RUN BECAUSE…

–I love not just the finish line, but the trip along the way

–it makes me feel free

–I’ve got energy to burn

–I need energy

–it’s my anti-depressant

–I hope my future children will

–I need an excuse to eat

–stopping would hurt so much more than a blister or a broken toenail

–walking takes too long

–my personal best is just that: MINE

–others can’t

–it’s a good kind of sore

–it makes the pavement feel needed

–there are a lot worse addictions out there

–there’s no better way to explore a city or enjoy the spring flowers and fall leaves

–I “just felt like runnin’”

–there’s no drug like adrenaline

–I’ll never know how far I can go unless I try

–the pavement doesn’t complain when you pound it

–it takes all I’ve got, but gives back more

–I CAN

My first 10K!

August 1, 2009, I’m doing my very first 10k! I’m so excited! My sister is doing it as well, so it will be something we can train for together. The race is called the ‘Beach to Beacon’, it starts at a beach (obviously lol) in Cape Elizabeth, ME and ends at Portland Head Light (gorgeous state park on the ocean with a beautiful lighthouse). Last year the race had 6,000 applicants so I have to register early before the slots are gone. I run alot now on a treadmill (because there’s way to much snow and ice outside right now), so in the spring I’m going to start running outside. I’ll keep you guys updated! Thanks for reading :-)

January 1st!

Happy 2009 everybody! :-) So I realized in order to keep myself accountable, I should really blog more. My posts are a bit sporatic..sometimes I don’t write anything for months at a time. I think it would really help me if I wrote down my daily food intake and exercise. Christmas was a bit of a nightmare, eating-wise. I definetely overindulged to much and some days it was just impossible to get to the gym. Although I did make a point to workout (at the very least) 4 days a week, so I didn’t do so bad. As much as I love the holidays, I’m glad they’re over. There’s just way to much foods around to tempt me! I still have about 1 1/2 bags of the Lindt extra dark chocolate truffles leftover from Christmas. These are my absolute favorite and a weakness of mine..so right now they’re safely put away in the freezer. I know one every now and then is ok (and dark chocolate is suppose to be really good for you in moderation), but let’s face it, sometimes it’s so hard to stop at just one!

Today has been pretty good so far. I’m watching my niece for a little while so I plan to head to the gym when she leaves. It’s so hard to eat healthy when you have little kids around! My niece is 3 1/2 and such a picky eater so I always end up eating what she leaves behind on her plate. Breakfast was: 1 bowl of honey bunches of oats cereal w/ 1% milk, cafe mocha from tim horton’s (not great I know!). Mid-morning: 2 cups of coffee (black), 1 orange, lunch: spaghettios, 1/2 grilled cheese, 1 apple, 1 lindt dark chocolate truffle. 32oz. water. Yeah, so not terrific so far but i guess it could be worse! I’m planning on a long run later on. Hope everyone’s having a great day!

OT: Rock the vote!

I’m so excited for tomorrow, I’m giddy! lol I think I’m more excited for this then I was for Christmas, or even my birthday. It’s just so important that everyone (all you Americans that is!) gets out there tomorrow and vote. If you havn’t registered yet, it’s so easy and takes no time at all.  If you have to wait in line, it’s so worth it in the end. It’s a honor and a privledge to be able to choose the next person to lead our country, so please do!

I think why I’m so excited is just because, it’s time for a change. It’s time to make this country better. It’s time to bring our soldiers home.  It’s so past the time that when people are sick, they can concentrate on getting better and not worrying about medical bills. People who have worked their entire lives shouldn’t be worrying about losing their homes and not being able to afford their medications.  Barack just has so much HOPE..when he talks about changing things, it’s real. He means it. He truely seems like a sincere, genuine hopeful man who I really believe in.

I was watching CNN at the gym and found out Barack’s Grandma passed away today :( It just breaks my heart. He’s come so far, accomplished so much because of her, it would’ve been wonderful if she could’ve seen the outcome of tomorrow.

Sorry this was completely off topic, but tomorrow’s a big day :)

The Biggest Loser

How insanely annoying are Vicki, Brady & Heba? I don’t want to give anything away to the west coasters who have yet to see tonight’s show, but my god. They are infuriating! Arn’t they suppose to be there to lose weight and get healthy? Instead they’re being so unbelievably coniving and vendictive. I’m going to HATE it if one of them wins! lol ok rant over :)

vegetarian chili

With the weather turning so cool and crisp lately, it’s really making me crave warm, comforting drinks and or foods such as: hot chocolate, cider, grilled cheese, soups, etc.  I really want to make a homemade chili (no meat please!) and have been searching for a good recipe. Does anyone have a personal favorite? I found a pretty good one but if anyone has one they really like, please share :) I really love Fall! With Fall comes pumpkins, apples, Halloween, warm sweaters and beautiful changes of color in leaves! It’s a wonderful time of year :)

Old Navy

I love Old Navy clothes. Most of their stuff is so cute, comfortable and affordable. However, their sizes really confuse me sometimes! Is it just me, or do their clothes seem to run on the large side? I bought 2 pairs of size 8 jeans a couple weeks ago, and they’re just so baggy on me. I know I’m not anything less then a size 8 (I’m about 5′5 1/2 and around 140-142lbs. or so). I was talking with a co-worker about this and she said that it’s a marketing ploy; Old Navy sizes run big because then people will think they’re a smaller size then what they actually are. So, if this is true, Old Navy thinks they’ll keep their customers coming back if they take a smaller size in their store. Anyone think this is true? I just think it’s interesting because in any other clothing store, my size ranges from a 8-10. Sizes vary so much from store to store these days though..it’s crazy! I’m in need of some new fall clothes (since last winter I’ve gone down about 2-4 sizes!:) ) I think I foresee a shopping trip in the near future! Have a great rest of the day everyone! :)
